Despite its name, Shrimp Mozambique is not originally from Mozambique but reflects the Portuguese colonial influence in Africa, incorporating spices and flavors from the region.

Polvo à Lagareiro is one of Portugal’s most beloved traditional dishes, known for its rich flavors, tender texture, and rustic simplicity. This classic recipe features roasted octopus drizzled generously with high-quality Portuguese olive oil—lagareiro meaning “olive-oil style,” a reference to the olive presses (lagares) of Portugal. The dish is typically prepared by slow-cooking the octopus until perfectly tender, then roasting it in the oven with garlic, onions, sea salt, and plenty of olive oil. It’s served warm with crisp batatas ao murro (smashed potatoes), which absorb all the delicious oils and aromatics.
Monks at the Jerónimos Monastery in Lisbon, Portugal are believed to have created pastel de nata in the 18th century. Monks used egg whites to starch clothes, leaving them with lots of leftover yolks. They used the yolks to create a rich custard filling for their tarts. The flaky crust is thought to have come from French patisserie techniques. The monks sold the tarts to raise money for the monastery.
